Welcome to third grade! I hope that you and your family had a relaxing summer break and you are ready to begin a “FROGTASTIC” year at Linton Hall School. I look forward to meeting you at Open House.
Your child will encounter many new things in third grade. We will work together while learning about communities, geography, and economics. We will investigate plant growth, changes in matter, and rocks and minerals in our science units. In math, we will embark on a voyage of learning about new topics and new ways of thinking. We will explore many different genres as we learn about ourselves as readers and writers.
I look forward to working together to create a positive and productive school year. Please email me with any questions at firstname.lastname@example.org
3rd grade schedule
Research shows that the best way to improve reading skills is simply to READ more! Please make sure your child reads a total of at least 20 minutes a day (around 2 hours a week) at home.
To foster reading at Linton Hall, we implement the Accelerated Reading program school wide. The Accelerated Reading (AR) program is a computer program that allows students to take comprehension quizzes on AR books. The student will be asked 5, 10, or 20 questions. All 3rd grade students should strive for 80% or higher on their quiz scores. A string of lower score may indicate the student is reading books too challenging and a string of 100% scores may indicate that a child may be reading books which are too easy.
In 3rd grade students are expected to earn 10 AR points each of the first, second and third grading periods and 15 AR points the fourth grading period. Attached you will find a reading log that can be kept at home. This way you and your child can keep track of his/her progress. Please keep AR slips at home, so your child can fill one out and bring it to school as he/she has finished a book. Your child should place the completed slip in the NOTES basket, and I will do my best to give him/her time to take the test some time that day.
