MATH
Most math curricula, including Linton Hall, use a “spiral” philosophy of teaching. This means it will cover the same material several years in a row, advancing the student on each pass. Therefore, a child practices basic math facts, telling time, working with money, fractions and other topics in 1st grade, then again in 2nd grade, then again in 3rd grade, and so on until about 5th or 6th grade.
At Linton Hall, we use the Sadlier-Oxford Math textbook in 2nd grade. We incorporate rigorous, yet fun lessons along with many hands on and computer based activities.
Math requires critical thinking as well as mastery of facts. In 2nd grade, we will focus on mastery of addition and subtraction facts for numbers 1 through 20. In addition, by the end of the year, students will have mastered multiplication facts for numbers 1 through 5.
In “spiral” math, some children do not learn the concepts the first time they are taught. Of those who do, many may not retain the information. The expectation of this method is that true mastery develops as a result of prolonged exposure that grows in complexity each year.
A grasp of math vocabulary is essential in developing mathematical strength. Therefore, second graders will spend time learning the terms necessary to fully understand each area of study.
Please have your child visit the Online Fun page often to play math games. Practice makes perfect!
