READING

In second grade, we are able to explore the richness of reading as children continue to gain fluency and deepen their comprehension. We will be using the Houghton Mifflin Reading Instruction series this year, plus various trade books.  The anthology (reader) and the leveled readers are collections of outstanding, authentic literature.   Selections are grouped into themes  that share a common subject or idea. Students will also participate in Literature Circles (very much like a book club) and Reader’s Theater whenever possible to further develop comprehension and an overall appreciation of reading.

  • Second grade reading instruction is based on the Literacy Cafe  and Daily 5 method developed by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser.  Students will become aware of the FACE of a good reader as we work on fluency, accuracy, comprehension, and extending vocabulary.  The following strategies will be strengthened during the year through whole group instruction, differentiated group instruction, as well as paired and individual reading and writing activities.

  • When Mrs. Baker and I meet with small groups, others will be reading to self, reading to a friend, and working on words and writing.  Students will learn how to choose just the right book and keep a personal library within the classroom.  This allows them to read, read, read, which is the most important exercise for fluency.
  •  Research shows that the best way to improve reading fluency and comprehension is simply to READ more! Please make sure your child reads a total of at least 2 hours a week at home. You can divide this into six 20-minute sessions, four 30-minute sessions, or whatever works for your family.

ACCELERATED READER

  • To foster reading at Linton Hall, we implement the Accelerated Reading program school wide.  Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that allows students to take a comprehension quiz on an AR book of their choice.
  • During a test, students will be asked 5 or 10 questions.  A score of 60% or higher for 5-question and 10-question quizzes is considered passing.  However, a score of 70% or below is not desirable. All students should strive for 80% or higher.
  • The computer keeps track of all student quizzes.  A report for each student is printed at the end of each grading period and is included with the report card. If you would like a printout at any time, I’m happy to provide one.
  • I require a minimum of 5 points the first two quarters (each one), 6 points the third quarter, and 8 points the last quarter.  However, I would like students to set their own goals (higher than the ones I’ve set, of course)  for points.  I believe when students set their own goals, they take ownership of the goal and try to reach it faster.
  • A.R. SLIPS are available by clicking on the links below.  You can also download a READING LOG and INCENTIVE CHART for  home use if you feel it will help your child reach his goal. Please keep a supply of A.R. slips at home, so your child can fill one out and bring it to school as soon as he/she has finished a book.
